It looks like Samsung is ready to attack yet another screen size niche. There’s a small gap between the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2 and the 7-inch Galaxy Tab, and that’s where the new Galaxy Mega models will sit.
Two models are apparently incoming. Samsung is working on the Galaxy Mega 5.8 (model GT-I9152) the Galaxy Mega 6.3 (GT-I9200). The smaller Mega is expected to go on sale somewhere around the last week of May, while the larger one will follow three weeks later.
It’s been rumored for some time that Samsung was working on at least one larger phone. Samsung fanned the flames at its Galaxy S4 launch event, when it showed off a game pad dock accessory that was capable of pairing with a 6.3-inch device. That’s larger than the S4 and Galaxy Note, so it’s pretty clear that Samsung was thinking ahead to future phone releases.
The 5.8-inch Galaxy Mega shouldn’t be too much larger than the Galaxy Note 2. Today’s thinner bezels mean it’s possible for manufacturers to squeeze in an extra .2 or .3 inches of screen without noticeably stretching a device.
The 6.3-inch Mega, however, will be big. Ascend Mate big. If you’ve seen pictures of a human hand holding Huawei’s behemoth, you know what to expect.
Curiously, neither of the Galaxy Mega models is expected to ship with S-Pen support. Is it really possible that Samsung feels like the six-inch zone isn’t right for Note functionality? With the Galaxy S4 encroaching on the original Galaxy Note’s territory it seems like the time is right to stretch the pen-friendly Note.
If the reported launch targets are accurate, we won’t have to wait long to find out what Samsung is really up to.
