Samsung launches ‘modest’ Galaxy Mega phones at 5.8 and 6.3 inches

Samsung Galaxy Mega
Samsung has unceremoniously announced the Galaxy Mega, and it’s offering up the newest member of the Galaxy family in two sizes: 5.8 and 6.3 inches. Hey, what did you expect? For Samsung to limit itself to just one screen size?
Both of the new models appear to stop short of their high-end Galaxy S and Galaxy Note cousins when it comes to specs. The 6.3-inch Mega features a dual-core 1.7GHz processor, while the 5.8-incher ships with a 1.4GHz chip. The larger Galaxy Mega also comes with a choice of 8 or 16GB of internal storage, while its smaller sibling is only available with 8GB.
Screen resolutions differ, too. The 6.3-inch Mega offers “HD” resolution, which in this case means 720p. Its 5.8-inch counterpart features a qHD display (960×540). Plan on using the Galaxy Mega on an LTE carrier? You’ll need the 6.3-inch model, as the 5.8-inch only comes with HSPA support.
Beyond that, the two phones bear nearly identical spec sheets. Both feature 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera. Both are expandable via micro SD (up to 64GB), and both ship with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and loads of Samsung’s in-house apps.
According to UberGizmo — who has already spent hands-on time with the Galaxy Mega — Samsung has managed to push these babies to their pocketable limits. The 6.3-inch model, notes the site’s Hubert Nguyen, still fits but is obviously quite noticeable. He also mentions that it’s quite a bit smaller than Huawei’s 6.1-inch Ascend Mate, which has everything to do with Samsung trimming away as much bezel as possible.
Now that the Galaxy Mega models have been announced, all that’s left is pricing and carrier information. Samsung has said that the global launch begins next month in Europe and that other markets will see the phones soon after, but that’s all the company is revealing so far.
It’s probably safe to say that both will be priced well under Samsung’s flagship phones, but nowhere near as cheap as similar devices from, say, Blu Products.
