Alongside announcing a thinner and lighter PS Vita today in Japan, Sony has unveiled a rather unusual little box they are calling the PS Vita TV.
It measures just 10 x 6cm in size and is around the same size as a deck of cards. It is equipped with an Ethernet port, HDMI-out, PS Vita card slot, and memory card slot, and aims to be a multi-function device that interacts with both your PS Vita and PS4, but can also be used alone with a DualShock controller.
Probably the coolest feature it offers is the ability to play PS Vita games on your TV using a DualShock 3 controller. But that’s just the start. The PS Vita TV will allow you to stream video from services like Hulu and Netflix, play PS4 games via Remote Play using a DualShock 4, and play both PSOne Classics and PSPgames, again through your TV. It also counts as the smallest PlayStation branded hardware ever released.
It’s unclear exactly how Sony intends to position the PS Vita TV in the market. At $100 coupled with the media and game playing/streaming capabilities it could be a great competitor toApple TV. Its tiny size also means you can plug it in and forget about it sitting next to your TV. Sony is also sweetening the deal by offering the device bundled with a DualShock 3 and 8GB memory card for $150. Not bad. All we need now is a release date and details of availability.
