Thieves hack casino cameras, pull off simple $32 million scam

Crown Casino
In a dashing heist that must have involved a rag-tag team of international and interracial thieves, Australia’s Crown Casino in Melbourne was hit with a fairly simple scam that ended up losing the casino a reported $32 million. The team of thieves managed to compromise the casino’s security cameras in order to get a better view of the gambling tables. The cameras, able to dexterously maneuver around and zoom in or out in order to provide casino security with a better bird’s-eye-view of the floor, were used to focus on other gambler’s hands in order to get a leg up on when to bet.
Though Crown isn’t confirming how the thieves managed the rip-off, international casino security consultant Barron Stringfellow states that the thieves most likely had an accomplice that helped the team tap into the casino’s security feed, then fed the gambler strategic information through a wireless earpiece. Stringfellow notes that casinos don’t check for wireless transmissions (which seems quite strange, but hey, we’re not international casino security consultants), but that would certainly explain why a device as simple as an earpiece wasn’t picked up by security.
The gambler played eight hands, and due to the streaming strategic information, was able to win the sum of $32 million. A VIP services manager was fired after the casino discovered the ploy, so what likely happened was that VIP manager was in on the scheme. High rollers at Crown are assigned a handler, which is that casino employee whose job it is to take care of the big spenders and make sure they have the best possible time, as well as continue spending money.
Of course, Crown isn’t likely to release specific details on the matter, because it’s not the greatest PR in the world when it turns out a casino’s security system was easily hacked. We just hope the thieves involved wore hip suits and sunglasses even though there’s no sun inside the casino.
