How to jailbreak iOS 6.1 on the iPhone 5 and iPad mini untethered

Evasi0n Jailbreak
After a five month wait, including at at least one false claim, iOS 6.1 has finally been jailbroken. Owners of the iPhone 5, iPad mini, and other up-to-date iOS devices, start your laptops and get ready for a step-by-step guide to releasing your gadget from Apple’s walled garden.

Getting started with Evasi0n

The Evasi0n Jailbreak works on Linux, OS X, and every version of Windows after XP. To get started, head over to their website and download the version that is compatible with your Operating System. While this is downloading, you should consider doing a full backup of your iDevice in iTunes.
It never hurts to have a backup stored on your computer in case anything happens during the Jailbreak process. While you are at it, you should disable any backup passwords in iTunes and lock passcodes on your iDevice according to the developers responsible for the Jailbreak.

Extract the Evasi0n application from the folder that was just downloaded to your PC. As soon as you start the app, it will look for a connected iOS device. After the app has found your iPad mini or iPhone 5 (etc.) and made sure it is supported, the Jailbreak icon will light up, and you’ll be ready to start. From this point forward, you shouldn’t touch anything unless explicitly instructed to. The team responsible for the jailbreak recommend stepping out and stretching your legs, but you do actually need to press some buttons during this process, so don’t wander too far.

Actually jailbreaking iOS 6.1

The Evasi0n jailbreak is broken up into several steps. You’ll see a reboot and the tool on your PC will start the scrolling progress bar for about a minute. When the tool reaches the next step, you’ll be prompted to wake your iDevice and open the Evasi0n app that is now on your homescreen. Once you have done this, you’ll see activity on both the iDevice and your computer for another minute. The computer part of the process will finish first, and you’ll be prompted with an exit button. Even though the computer is finished, you need to leave your iDevice alone until it is finished.

At this point, the app is trying to grab everything needed to run successfully. This will take longer on some devices than others. The iPad Mini, for example, will take closer to ten minutes, while the iPhone 5 will take about five. You’ll see a final reboot, and when you are prompted with a home screen again you’ll have the Cydia App on your homepage, ready to be used.
Should anything go wrong during this process, you’ll be able to reboot your iDevice and complete a system restore through iTunes. Any time your iPhone/iPad is connected to your computer, iTunes will have what you need in order to restore back to brand new, and from there you can use a system backup to restore your apps and settings. At long last, iOS 6.1 users have what they need in order to use apps that live outside of the App Store.
